Here’s a photo chronology of the projects we’ve worked on thus far at the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive “The Possible” textile studio weaving workshops. I might find a moment to say more about the past couple months, but I’ll let the weavings tell the story for now.

I spent the afternoon of 27 February finishing up the first piece on the first loom. There was a parade coming up at the end of the week, and we wanted to include something from the textile/weaving studio. I love how the pattern changed by introducing a different shuttle, which twisted my threads.

The first loom’s first piece unrolled! 27 February (we began tying string heddles on 2 February!)

Here’s the section I added to the end to finish our first piece.

A photo by Travis Meinolf shows the context of the looms within the Berkeley Art Museum. Ceramics studio and Amy Franceschini’s beeswax candle project in the background.

Travis holds up the first piece of cloth collaboratively woven by museum visitors and all of us volunteer weavers. The curator David Wilson is in the background with another “Possible” artist getting ready for the parade.

Travis, myself, and David Wilson got wrapped up in the first piece!

Meanwhile, there are also Actionweaver Laser Looms to try. Yuka is showing people how.

Even the weaver’s son gets in the Laser Loom action!

This museum visitor left grinning, he and his friend had so much fun on the Laser Looms.
-
-
At some point we got four floor looms set up. The blue silk banner above the loom second from left was dyed in the indigo vat on site in the dye lab.
-
-
Another Possible artist, Ajit, started translating his drawing style into a woven context. This is his first time weaving, and he warped up this loom too.
-
-
Ajit’s inventive weight to even out tension on the warp.
-

Some lines I added to the second piece to finish it up. The warp threads offered a pattern in addition to our stripes of color, as there were areas where Grace skipped dents.

Here’s the second piece of cloth unrolled off the second loom on 12 March.

-
Again, here’s the section I put in at the end to finish up the piece.

Our collaborative first and second pieces at the Possible, with the Domestic Integrities rug in background.
-
-
On one of the looms with wide set dents we decided to create a rag rug, given the piles of fabric donated for the Domestic Integrities rug available to use.
-
-
We cut the first piece off the loom in front of the reed so we would save ourselves the work of re-sleying the new warp. I tied them on to the old warp threads one afternoon (5 March).

Our THIRD piece unrolled off the loom, 23 March. I took this one home to wash and set it.

Here’s what happened to our first three pieces. We cut them up and sewed them together. It was a stressful moment to put scissors to this cloth…
-
-
But something beautiful emerged.
-
-
Here’s my color lines on the fourth piece.
-
-
Due to unresolvable tension issues, we cut this fourth piece off short on 30 March.

I reattached the warp threads on this tricky warp job (threads of different weights roll at different lengths), and started the new piece out with green and black and light blue on 30 March.
